Conference Ends on a High Note!

Saturday was an intensive day of learning in the sessions and exhausting shopping at the Trade Show. Then it was off to party and dance to Jane Bond and the Pink Martini's.

So tired attendees started Sunday off with several great lectures by Colleen Pelar, Jennifer Sobie and Judy Warth and Sue Pearson. These speakers and others got our brains back on dog training.

Our closing speaker was the entertaining and enlightening Victoria Stillwell. She talked about communicating with dogs and learning about all the senses dogs use to communicate with us. With her vivacious speaking style and her great video clips, Victoria was the perfect way to end a great conference.

We also took time to honor President Kellyann Conway and Secretary Laura Van Dyne for their 6 years of dedication and service to the APDT. We so appreciate their hard work.

Your Conference Committee starts the planning for Oakland tomorrow morning so you can be sure our next Conference will be even better than this one. Mark your calendars for October 21-25, 2009.

Saturdog Night Live on Friday!

Attendees had difficult decisions to make on Friday. We started our breakout sessions yesterday which meant we had to decide which of several speakers we listened to at each time slot. Hard to choose when the line-up included experts such as Grey Stafford, Suzanne Clothier, Karen London and Soraya Juarbe-Diaz and more. Some of our members took the Louisville Zoo trip or went with Allan Bauman to the Kentucky Humane Society. A busy day was had by all. And of course we still had to make time to hit the trade show!

To unwind, people headed out to dinner and then back to Ballroom C for "You Should Be in Pictures". Our conference photographer took pictures of groups of attendees so we'll have memories of the event. Duffer Schultz offered a wonderful video tribute to Dr. R.K. AndersonThen the "Not Ready for Dog Park Players" performed their version of Saturday Night Live.

APDT President Kellyann Conway transformed herself into "Sarah Pawlin". We got to see Ian in a variety of roles including "Simon ChowChow" in the APDT Idol skit and Teoti Anderson as "Paula Airedale". The Beagles offered two songs and we treated to favorite characters like Rosanne Rosannadana and the Church Lady. A good time was had by all.

Play Symposium

Yesterday we had our all day Play Symposium. We had a terrific line up of presenters who gave us the latest in play research and showed great videos.

After that we got to play at the Trade Show! Our attendees swarmed the exhibitor booths to buy the latest in dog products.

Today we start our breakout sessions and workshops. Tonight we have "The You Should Be In Pictures" social event which includes homegrown entertainment by the Not Ready for Dog Park Players.

Conference Off to a Great Start!

Greetings from Louisville!

The2008 APDT Conference got off to a great start yesterday with a wonderful talk by Dr. Robert Miller on natural horsemanship. It was followed by a ceremony to honor our award winners.

The afternoon was taken up with interesting sessions by Sarah Kalnajs and Teoti Anderson. President Kellyann Conway and Executive Director Richard Spencer talked about the state of the association at the General Membership Meeting and outlined some of the successes of the past year. They also told us about exciting plans for the future of our organization.

Conference puppies got together at the Conference Puppy Orientation which was followed by a Welcome Reception for all the attendees.

Hug A Puppy

While our veterans make up the majority of our conference attendees, puppies are always in attendance. Each year our puppies arrive hungry and eager to learn (like all of us).

I am calling on our veterans to hug a puppy - at least once a day during the conference!

My friends and I actually seek puppies out each year. We chat them up and try to really get to know at least two puppies each conference. Usually there are three of four puppies in our pack before the conference is over. As a result, the number of people that I meet up with every year seems to grow exponentially. Why? Because those puppies that we meet do the same thing - seek out puppies - each year that they return.

You may be wondering "How should you approach a puppy?" Well, I am sure that most of you already know how - but here are a few starting tips:

For those of you who like the direct approach - A genuine hello with a smile can be effective.

For those who need the opportunity to present itself... Comment on something in the immediate area, such as the long line you're both waiting in or the wealth of information in your workbook.

Some favorite conversation generators are: Which speakers are you plan on attending? Where do you go for professional advice? How many dogs do you have? What are their names? How did you choose their names?

Every puppy should have at least a new friend or two or twenty by the end of the conference. By welcoming our puppies, we improve the diversity of experience, knowledge, opinions and ideas at our conference. Remember that you were once a puppy too. Give them a gentle hug - let them know that we're a friendly bunch and that we are happy they are here too!

Let the Networking Begin!

One of the things I enjoy most about the Conference is the chance to meet up with old friends and make new ones. The Conference Committee has planned events that will help you do just that.

If you are arriving on Tuesday, stop by the Conference Registration desk on the 2nd floor to check in and pick up your workbook. Then head over to the DVD networking. We'll have a cash bar and videos of dogs doing fun things. Come on in, relax, chat and watch some videos. If you have DVDs of your dogs running agility, rally, playing in the dog park, doing tricks or being bad, bring them with you to show to your fellow attendees. You still have time to get out the video recorder and tape your dog this weekend. No videos - don't worry - just show up and meet new friends. DVD Networking from 5:00-7:00 PM on Tuesday in the Nunn Room.

We will have the Round Table Discussions on Thursday from 12:15 - 1:00 PM in the Carrol Ford room. Pick up some lunch at the concession and then join a table. We have all sorts of interesting topics set up but you can also start a table of your own.

More Louisville Attractions

The fall colors won't be at the peak during the Conference, but it will still be beautiful. The city's nighttime skyline is a great photo-op when viewed from the Indiana side. The Clark Memorial Bridge (aka Second Street Bridge) is a short two blocks for the hotel, which will take you across to Indiana.

Both sides of the river offer great restaurants with outdoor seating overlooking the river. On the Indiana side, Rocky's Italian Grill and Buckheads offer outdoor seating where you can enjoy the great fall weather and view the downtown skyline along with great food. On the Kentucky side, Joe's Crab Shack is fun along with great seafood. Another great independent restaurant on the Indiana side is Come Back Inn at 415 Spring St. in Jeffersonville (only a few miles form the hotel across the bridge). You can't really go wrong with the pasta specials, but some other favorites are the Chicken Alfredo and the Bolognese. The won ton appetizers are spectacular! Go hungry because they give you a huge bowl of pasta!

Visiting Fourth Street Live is a must. It's Louisville's Time Square and it's a short walk from the hotel. It contains many pubs, clubs, restaurants and live music concerts including Hard Rock Cafe and Lucky Strike Bowling Alley. Other area attractions to see are the Louisville Slugger Museum, the Muhammad Ali Museum, the beautiful Cave Hill Cemetery (Colonel Sanders is buried here) and of course, Churchill Downs.

Imagine this. You have arrived at the Galt House, checked into your room and are now wandering around, wondering where is everybody. If it is Tuesday and 1:30 PM, we are stuffing Conference Bags!! Why don't you come join us? We'll be in the Breathitt Room - located in the Suite Tower, 2nd floor/Ballroom level.

It's a fun way to get reacquainted with old friends and meet people new to the Conference. And regardless if you have just flown or driven in, it will be a good way to stretch your legs as we play ring around the goodies table. Not only that , you will get to be among the first to see what great treats, literature and who knows what else there will be (I know I don't).

By the time we are done, Registration will be open and you can pick up your packets and join up with friends to enjoy the DVD Networking for some entertainment.

Louisville Attractions

Loueyville, Looavull, Louvull, Lewisville. However you pronounce it, Louisville, Kentucky is an exciting city full of incredible restaurants, beautiful scenery, southern hospitality and a top-notch live music scene. Louisville is called the Derby City for obvious reasons since it's the home of the most prestigious horse race. It is also called the River City since it borders the Ohio River, which is the boundary between Kentucky and Indiana.

There is so much to see and do in Louisville that it's hard to know where to start. Even if you don't have time to see the sights, you have to eat. Louisville is known for its great restaurants. While we have the typical chain restaurants, you must experience the wonderful independent ones. We have a campaign here to support our wonderfully eclectic, independent businesses called "KEEP LOUISVILLE WEIRD." Plus, the independently owned restaurants are usually the best.

My top recommendation is O'Shea's Irish Restaurant & Pub at 956 Baxter Ave (only a short trolley ride away-about 2 miles). The owner, Tom O'Shea is Louisville's 2008 Irish Person of the Year for his generosity to various charities as well as earning some of Louisville's Best Awards. O'Shea's french fries have won Best of Louisville Awards many times. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu, but their fish & chips are the best in town. Tom O'Shea also owns Flanagan's (only a block from O'Shea's at 934 Baxter Ave) and Brendan's at 3921 Shelbyville Rd. The best part is that Tom O'Shea has agreed to give a discount to the APDT Conference attendees. Just show your APDT Conference badge and receive 10% off!

A very popular and eclectic restaurant in Louisville is Lynn' Paradise Cafe at 984 Barret Ave. It has even received national attention. Lynn's has always been on the priority list for out of town visitors. It's not only a fabulous restaurant; it is a sight to see. It will have you smiling with the wacky decor, toys on the table along with the ugly lamps. Their breakfast items are the best in town and you can order them at any time of the day.

If it's a great burger that you seek, The Granville Inn at 1601 S.3rd Street is a little hole in the wall near the University of Louisville campus that hs the best hamburgers in town. And, what's even better-they're CHEAP!

So What in the World is the APDT General Membership Meeting?

That's a great question. The APDT bylaws require that we hold one meeting each year for the membership. Since our membership is scattered throughout the world the yearly conference is the logical place to hold it.

We hold the meeting in the large general session room so all members may attend. There is no attendance or entry requirement so even if you are not an APDT member you are welcome. The meeting will be called to order and the minutes from the 2007 meeting will be voted on by everyone in attendance. The minutes will be printed in your Conference Workbook so you will be able to read them.

The general outline is:

State of the Association report

Membership report

Financial report

Board of Directors Election report

The meeting is concluded with an opportunity for members to ask questions and make comments or suggestions to the Board of Directors. But rest assured, if you have something to say, but don't want to say it in a public setting, you will have ample opportunity throughout the conference to speak personally with board members.

The General Membership meeting is on Wednesday, October 15 at 4:15 PM. It is paced to move along quickly and be interesting. Please attend.

Conference Puppy? You are not alone.

If you are reading this Blog then you have either registered or are considering registering for this year's APDT Conference. Perhaps you are really excited about the speakers and the topics that they will be covering, but you have never been are nervous about jumping with both feet into this large group of dog training fanatics. Can I keep up with the material? Which seminars will be most valuable to me? Will I find somebody with whom to eat meals and explore Louisville?

These questions are all going through my mind on the eve of my first APDT Conference. I do not personally know any of the other trainers attending this year and therefore can only count on a similar passion for dog training and behavior to lay the foundation for new friendships with other attendees.

Remember that everyone is attending for the same reasons: to learn (not only from speakers from connecting with other attendees), to make friends and to re-energize our careers.

The Louisville Conference is fast approaching - time to make new friends, to reconnect with long-time friends, and to top up the brain with doggy knowledge. The Keynote Address will be given by a good friend of mine, equine veterinarian and cartoonist, Dr. Robert Miller. Dr. Miller pioneered work on early (24-48 hour-old) socialization of foals - puppy training for horses - and he co-founded the Sierra Veterinary Medical Association for veterinarians (me included) who like to learn veterinary science while skiing.

Dr. Miller is followed by a veritable pack of stellar speakers - simply the best of the best and far too good to miss. And also, we get to play for a day! Make sure you don't miss the APDT Play Symposium: "Play in Our Dogs' Lives". See you all there.

The workshop pairs eight children and dogs of varying ages and levels of training and with Allan directing the pairs using tried and true and, most importantly, fun techniques. The varying ages and experiences of the children will allow you to see how the exercises can be effective and applicable to all ages. The exercises are focused on the children doing the actual training of the dog by properly controlling the reward. Take this opportunity to view training exercises that are easy and fun for children and dogs alike.

If you conduct classes with many family members attending, you will appreciate the powerful ideas and tools and incorporate them into you own training classes. The exercises are from Allan's book and DVD Games and Rhymes-Dog Training for Children.

Have a cookie. Don't know what you've done to deserve this? Confused? Well, the same can happen with your dog; inappropriate rewarding can result in poor control during training. In order for a reward to be effective , the dog must have some motivational drive towards it. Back by popular demand from the 2006 APDT Conference, Allan Bauman's Reward --But Do It Properly workshop demonstrates the importance of establishing reward control before the training begins.

You know the importance of timing and rewarding the dog for performing an exercise. But have you taken the time to identify the behavior and control the dog is offering at the point of acquiring the reward? What behavior is your dog offering during the presentation and receipt of these rewards? Can you have your dog by-pass a high level treat to take a low level reward? These questions and more will be answered in Allan's workshop. PRACTICAL ETHICS FOR TRAINERS

For all of us who work with families and dogs, these clashes of values-ethical dilemmas-are inevitable. Just as we need skills and experience to work with dogs. we need to become adept at handling ethical challenges as well. The approach outlined in this session will help you to be come as accomplished at ethical decision making as you are at working with families and dogs.

One unique aspect of this presentation is that it will be interactive. Ethical decision making is a skill (just like dog training) and therefore we need not only to master the underlying principles but also to practice the techniques. We'll be discussing some of the basic concepts and then trying them out in dialogues related to two real-life case studies of challenging situations that trainers face.

Fortunately, we don't have to do this alone. For thousands of years, the greatest minds have pondered the best approaches to making ethical choices. This ancient wisdom can inform even modern decisions. In this session we'll provide and easy to understand synthesis of these approaches that you can use in your daily activities. You don't need to be a philosopher to make good decisions; but it helps to know a little bit about the ways in which these deep thinkers have tried to work through dilemmas. You'll be pleased to discover that it's no more difficult than the learning theory or canine behavior you learned to become the trainer that you are.

BECOMING A GREAT DANCE PARTNER FOR YOUR DOG!

When we train with positive reinforcement, we obtain behaviors using many different techniques such as luring, prompting and fading, catching, targeting and shaping by successive approximation. All of these have benefits and obstacles.

Let's take something as "simple" as teaching a Sit. Simple? Perhaps not!

* Luring - Dog has no interest in food.

* Prompting - Dog is afraid of prompt.

* Catching - Oops-"I missed it again!"

* Targeting - Dog has no interest in following the target.

* Shaping by Successive Approximation - Takes too long for the average pet owner.

"We cannot be quiet and sit still!

Perhaps we need to think of other ways to work with dogs when the above techniques are not working or when working with a problem dog. Communication with conspecifics requires an understanding of how ritualized displays or signals can have an effect on the dog. The dog may confirm or reject our information.

Further, communication need not be verbal. We can obtain instantaneous behaviors by using tactile and visual signals as well.

As Suzanne Clothier has said on many occasions, "learn to train with feel." Have we become robots, fearing that every step must be concise according to the basics of learning theory? While it is important, are we missing out on the art of observing our dance partner and helping him learn the steps or is the dog training us?

This workshop will focus on stepping outside of the training books and stepping into rhythm with your dog. Yes, you will put your hands on the dog, learn to take your time, try different things, relax and have fun. I will be watching "you" - not the dog! If the dog gets it, you did a fine job.
